In March 2011 I was lucky enough to receive an Arts Council Wales grant towards my project on the City of Ottawa, a sailing ship built in Quebec, Canada, in 1860, and towed to Rhyl harbour at the end of her long working life, where her remains are still visible today.

The book describes the exciting life of the ‘City of Ottawa’, which sailed all around the world, to Australia, Burma, India, South America, the West Indies, carrying timber and coal, and sometimes more exotic cargoes.  It also tells teh stories of the men who sailed on her, who were often illiterate sailors, but who nevertheless experienced near shipwreck, deaths at sea, mutiny, desertions, storms and serious diseases, all sorts of exciting stuff.

LATEST NEWS:

Paintings, photographs and artefacts illustrating the book can now be seen at:

  1. -Ruthin Library, Denbighshire, until 31st January

  2. -Meliden Golf Club, Meliden Road, Prestatyn until mid-February.
